Shalgam sabzi recipe is a vegan and gluten-free dry curry made in a basic style using minimal and regular ingredients from the kitchen.

Turnip, which is called Shalgam, also spelled as Shaljam in Hindi is a vegetable commonly grown and available in winter states of India and Middle & Eastern Asia.

As the winters have initiated in India, so this is one of the must recipe in the Kitchen. Gets ready under 30 minutes, this delicious recipe goes well with roti/chapati/Indian flat bread.

This white base and purple topped round-shaped vegetable might not be common and famous everywhere being under rated, but the number of health benefits it is loaded with will surely make you fall for it.

Full of anti oxidants, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber, this vegetable has all that abilities which can pull you towards itself besides just being tasty.

As far as ingredients are concerned, they are regular and basic but one thing which is worth mentioning is that you shouldn’t skip ginger and garlic.

The reason for saying so is that turnip is of cold nature (tasir), so it is very important to add ginger and garlic or atleast ginger.

STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF TURNIP VEGETABLE RECIPE INDIAN

1.Peel, wash and cut the turnip into pieces.

2. Take oil in a pan and add cumin and asafoetida. Let cumin splutter.

3. Add green chilli and ginger garlic paste.

4. Let the paste turn brown.

5. Now add onion and cook the onion until it turns slightly brown.

6. Add tomatoes and cook till tomatoes begin to release oil and leave the sides of the pan.

7. Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and coriander powder. Mix.

8. Then add turnip and water. Mix.

9. Put a lid and let turnip cook on low heat while stirring at intervals.

10. Cook until the turnip turns soft enough to eat. This may take 20-25 minutes.

11. Once it is done, add garam masala and mix.

12. Garnish with coriander leaves.

Ingredients
  

  • 500 gram turnip/shalgam
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2 Tomatoes (chopped)
  • 1 green chilli (chopped)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/8 tsp asafoetida/hing
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • Red chilli powder to taste
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves/cilantro chopped
