So Namak Para is a popular Indian snack, primarily made with all purpose flour, salt and few more basic ingredients.

So the said snack is cut into small pieces, mostly diamond shape and also into long strips and their taste is mainly salted, hence named as Namak Para.

The word healthy hereinabove must be raising the eyebrows of many and they must be thinking that how anything made with maida and having 1/4 cup of oil can be healthy?

But let us clear that any snack having oil inside it and a snack deep fried in oil makes a big difference as the oil recipes have less total fat, lower heat damage and nutrient retention. On the contrary, deep fried snacks have high calorie absorption, high heat oxidation and involves weight gain risk.

And in reference to the maida, it is submitted that maida is not bad if consumed occasionally, but yes, it’s not good if it is part of your daily routine. Moreover deep fried maida is more harmful but if you are cooking it in air fryer, scenario changes.

We don’t know why it is so but nanak para is particularly popular around Indian festivals, especially Diwali. People make it in bulk for home consumption and for gifting as well.

Take all purpose flour, semolina, black pepper powder, carom seeds, baking soda, salt and oil.

Firstly rub the flour mixture with your hand and bring it to a breadcrumbs consistency.

Once it is done, knead a firm dough with water.

 Cover it and rest for 30 minutes.

Now take a ball out of the dough.

Roll it thin on a clean shelf.

Prick the fork all over the surface.

Now cut the dough in diamond shape either with knife or pizza cutter or with the cookie cutter.

Grease the air fryer basket. If deep frying, then place the oil for heating.

Arrange the diamond shaped dough in the basket without overlapping one another.

Brush or spray little oil on each one of them.

Air fry @180°C for 7 minutes.

Take the basket out and shake it.

Further air fry at the same temperature and for the similar duration i.e. @180°C for 7 minutes.

Once done, bring them out. Let them cool down completely.

Namak pare are ready. Store in Air tight container and serve with tea.

  1. All purpose flour can be replaced with whole wheat flour or both in the ratio of 50:50.
  2. Semolina is optional but recommended, as it makes the Namak Para more crispy.
  3. Oil can be replaced with desi ghee but ghee will turn the vegan snack into vegetarian.

  • 3/4 tsp carom seeds/ajwain

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper powder/kali mirch
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • Water as needed
