WHAT IS MURMURA CHIVDA?
Murmura means puffed rice and Chivda is an indian savoury snack mix, made of different ingredients which may include peanuts, fried lentils, puffed rice, chickpea flour ghatia and also some dry indian spices.
So the snacks made using puffed rice is called Murmura Chivda.
However, Murmura is also called by many other names also like mumra, mamra, mambra, murmura, murmure and kurmura etc and you find any such Chivda recipe with any of such names, don’t get confused. At the end, this is going to be puffed rice snack.
Also you can make any additions to recipe like roasted cashew, raisins, fried lentils, coconut slivers, almonds, green chillies and corn flakes.
A TEA TIME SNACK
This is one of the most loved tea time snack in india you can enjoy with a cup of hot tea or coffee.
However, it is not confined to be associated with tea but you can munch it anytime of thr day whenever you feel little hungry.
CAN I MAKE IT WITHOUT OIL?
Though very less oil is added in making this recipe yet you can make it without a single drop of oil.
Just dry roast the ingredients and you are done.
Actually oil is added with a purpose. Besides oil adds a good flavour to Chivda, it is added to bring some element of moisture in the recipe.
If there’s no moisture, then the dry spices will not be able to stick to each grain of puffed rice and peanuts.
Results will be the faded Chivda as all the spices will settle down at the bottom of container.
MURMURA CHAAT RECIPE
This Chivda recipe can easily be transformed into Chaat recipe with just little more additions.
Add some chopped onion, red tomatoes, bit of green chutney and/or khatti meethi chutney, some sev, fresh coriander, chopped green chilies and a squeeze of lemon.
Season it with more chaat masala and dry roasted cumin powder. And here’s your delicious murmura chaat is ready.
HOW TO STORE MURMURA CHIVDA?
Store it in a clean airtight jar and you can enjoy it for months together without refrigeration.
STEP WISE PICTORIAL METHOD OF Spicy Puffed Rice Recipe
- Take a heavy bottomed pan and add oil in it.
- Add peanuts and roast them on low heat till they slightly brown.
- Take them out of the pan and keep aside.
- Off the heat and let oil cool down a bit.
- Add curry leaves, red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Saute.
- Switch on the heat and add murmure.
- Roast them for a minute or two. If your murmure are soggy, then roast them for 5-7 minutes or till they again turn crisp.
- Add salt, black salt, dry mango powder, powdered sugar and roasted peanuts. Mix evenly.
- Spicy murmure are ready.
Once they cool down completely, store them in airtight container.

Ingredients
- 2 tbsp oil
- 3/4 cup peanuts
- 10-12 curry leaves
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 4 cups murmura/puffed rice
- Salt to taste
- 1/2 tsp black salt
- 1 tsp dry mango powder
- 1 tsp powdered sugar
