And the above mentioned names are just the Hindi names only. The same vegetable is called by some English names as well, like Yardlong bean, long bean, asparagus bean, snake bean, Chinese long bean and long-podded cowpea.
In India, majorly cultivated in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Assam, North-Eastern hill regions, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, this Barbati / Barbatti is a warm and humid-climate vegetable and grown at different times in different parts of India.
The appearance of this Chawli ki phali is quite similar to normal fali, popularly called by the name Green Beans but when it comes to this Barbati, the length and taste is really long and high. Meaning thereby lobia ki fali is much much delicious than regular green beans.
This chawli ki sabzi recipe is one of the most easy recipe to cook with the extremely delicious taste. Though in the making of phali ki sabzi recipe, we have added potatoes as well, but you can make this barbati ki phali ki sabzi without using any accompaniment.
And a time do one promise: once you will eat this aloo phali ki sabzi, you are not going to remain in liking for green beans.

Step Wise Pictorial recipe of Lobia Ki Phali Sabzi | Barbati Recipe | Chawli Ki Phali
Remove the ends of fali and cut into around 1 inches pieces.
Wash them with cold water.
Then put hot water in them and leave aside.
Heat mustard oil in a pan.
Add potatoes.
Saute them on high heat until they get brown spots.
Remove the potatoes from the pan.
Now add onion, tomatoes, green chilli, cumin seeds, salt, turmeric powder, coriander powder, spicy red chilli powder and kashmiri red chilli powder in the pan, already having enough oil.
Mix everything well.
Put a lid and let the ingredients cook.
Do stir at intervals and mash the tomatoes.
Once oil is seen separating, add fali.
Give it a good mix.
Add water suffering enough to cook the fali.
Cover and cook it on low heat until fali and potatoes are cooked. If sabzi is cooked but still you see some water left, turn the heat to high and let water evaporate completely.
Lastly add garam masala and mix.
Labia ki fali ki sabzi is ready. Enjoy hot with roti.
NOTES
- You can make it even without potatoes. It still tastes great.
- This is not compulsory to stir fry the potatoes first. You can directly add the raw potatoes at the stage when fali is added and cook both together. Actually stir frying enhances the taste of potatoes which has definitely an impact on the overall recipe.

1 cup = 250 ml
- 500 gram lambi fali/Lobia Ki Phali
- 2-3 potatoes (peeled and cubed)
- 1 onion (chopped)
- 1 Tomato (chopped)
- 1 green chilli (chopped)
- 1/2 tsp spicy red chilli powder
- 1 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp mustard oil
