Vegan, gluten-free and one pot meal, raw mango rice are made using green mangoes, basic spices and steamed rice.
The most popular recipe from South India, especially from the State of Andhra Pradesh, these rice are also called by different names like Mangai Sadam, Mamidikaya Pulihora, mavinakayi chitranna, mango pulihora, mango chitranna, mavinakayi, mavinakayi chitranna in kannada and mango pulihora in telugu.
The making process is this recipe is quite similar to lemon rice, which is also a South Indian delicacy.
Both the rice recipes are tangy, mildly spicy and tongue tickling.
The only difference is that in lemon rice, the sourness and tanginess comes from the lemons whereas the same is derived from the raw mangoes in the later recipe.
Lemon rice can be made on any day and month of the year but you have limited time to make and enjoy mango rice.
The reason is obvious that mangoes are not available throughout the year. Only during summers and especially for 2 to 3 months, mangoes can be seen in the market.
So you can’t skip the opportunity to miss this delicious and mouth-watering recipe.
STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF RAW MANGO RICE
- Take oil in a pan and add asafoetida and mustard seeds. Let seeds crackle.
- Add ginger, chana dal, urad dal, dry red chili and green chilies.
- Saute till ginger turns slightly brown, so as daals.
- Add curry leaves and saute for couple of seconds.
- Then add Coconut and peanuts.
- Saute them till they turn brown and aromatic.
- Add mangoes and cook them for 2-3 minutes.
- Put some turmeric.
- Then add rice and salt.
- Mix them well so that everything incorporates well.
Raw Mango rice recipe is ready. Enjoy hot or warm.
NOTES
- Rice must be completely cool when using to make this recipe. Hot rice may turn mushy while cooking.
- You can add fresh grated coconut or desiccated coconut too.

Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Oil
- 1/8 tsp asafoetida
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tsp ginger grated
- 1 tsp chana dal
- 1 tsp urad dal
- 2 green chilies slit lengthwise
- 1 dry red chili (break
- 8-10 curry leaves
- 2 tbsp peanuts
- 2 tbsp coconut grated or dessicated
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 3/4 cup Raw Mango grated
- 3 cups Cooked rice
