The term “Jalfrezi” is derived from the Bengali word “jhal” which means “spicy” and “frezi” meaning “stir-fry”.

Originally Jalfrezi is a stir-fried dish that was invented by the Indian-Bangla cooks to revive the leftover roast chicken by stir frying it with tomatoes, veggies and spices, hence named as Chicken Jalfrezi.

Following the similar trends, vegetarian version of Jalfrezi was invented using paneer (indian cottage cheese) substituting chicken.

Paneer Jalfrezi is a delectable and vibrant Indian dish that boasts a riot of colors, flavors, and textures.

Paneer batons cooked with bell pepper & tomato batons alongwith regular indian spices makes this mouthwatering dish named paneer Jalfrezi.

Although there’s not only one vegetarian substitute of chicken Jalfrezi but veg Jalfrezi is also there amongst these.

Veg Jalfrezi and veg paneer Jalfrezi are two more dishes using the similar trends.

The difference between veg Jalfrezi, veg paneer Jalfrezi and paneer Jalfrezi lies in the use of prime ingredient.

In veg Jalfrezi, only vegetables are cooked in a Jalfrezi style whereas in veg paneer Jalfrezi, paneer goes alongwith other veggies. Lastly coming to paneer Jalfrezi, the present recipe is all about which dish, is made using only paneer.

Although it is the bell pepper which is common in all the three types of jalfrezis.

STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF PANEER JALFREZI RESTAURANT STYLE

 

1. Take paneer and cut into sticks or batons. The quantity of paneer and other ingredients is given in the recipe card below.

2. Likewise cut the bell peppers (all 3 colours) and tomato into sticks and batons.

3. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, ginger garlic paste, green chilli and dry red chilies. Saute till ginger garlic paste turns brown.

4. Then add and saute onion till turns pink and translucent.

5. Add salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Mix.

6. Add tomato puree.

7. Cook it too until the raw aroma of tomato go away.

8. Add water to smoothen the masala.

9. Then add bell pepper and tomato sticks/batons.

10. Saute on high heat for 2 minutes. Just roast them good but let them loose their crunch.

11. Lastly add paneer sticks, kasuri methi, coriander leaves and lemon juice.

12. Give them a good mix but carefully without breaking the paneer sticks.

Ingredients
  

  • 200 gram Paneer
  • 1/2 green bell pepper
  • 1/2 yellow bell pepper
  • 1/2 red bell pepper
  • 1 large tomato
  • 2 tbsp tomato puree
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 1 green chilli
  • 2 dry red chilies
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • Red chilli powder to taste
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp kasuri methi
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 1/4 cup water
