Kacche kele i.e. Raw Bananas are something which are harvested before they are ripen.

These bananas are very popular in south india and used in many ways, one is this sabzi.

Such bananas are starchy like potatoes and and widely used in Indian vegetarian cooking.

In many of the Hindu communities, raw banana is a staple during fasting days (vrat), since it is considered phalahar (permitted food).

If you have never eaten anything made out of raw bananas, let us tell you that they are almost bland in taste like potatoes.

Anyone totally unfamiliar with them may confuse himself with the arbi even.

Raw bananas are not only considered pious food but a healthy one also because it is rich in fiber, resistant starch, and nutrients like potassium, which is good for digestion and energy.

The beauty of raw bananas lie in the fact that that absorb spices beautifully bring blend, as already said.

Called by different names in different languages like Vazhakkai in Tamil and Kancha Kola in Bengali, raw banana is an integral part of South Indian and coastal cuisines and no traditional Sadya (feast) meals is complete without it.

This recipe is the testament to the fact that how a simple ingredient can be turned into something extraordinary and here lies the beauty of Indian cooking.

 

 

 

 

Kacche Kele Ki Sabzi | Raw Banana Curry

STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF KACCHE KELE KI SABZI :

 

 

Cut the edges of bananas.Peel them.


Cut into medium size pieces.


Apply bit of salt and 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder to the banana pieces. Keep aside.

Add peanuts in a pan and dry roast them on low heat until slightly brown. Take them out.

Take a reasonable quantity of oil in the same pan and when oil is hot, add banana pieces. Fry till bananas turn brown from both sides.

Take them out.

Remove excess oil from the pan leaving behind 1 tbsp.

Add cumin seeds, bay leaves, ginger garlic paste, onion, tomatoes, red chilli powder, coriander powder and salt. Mix well.

Put a lid and let the tomatoes cook.

Do stir at intervals.

In 10 to 12 minutes, oil will be seen separating the tomatoes which is a sign that is are properly cooked.

Add fried banana pieces. Mix.

Add water, mix and put a lid. Let it cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes.

Remove the lid and add garam masala, coriander leaves and roasted peanuts after coarsely crushing them.

Serve hot.

  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Oil as needed
