WHAT IS SHEET CAKE?

The word “Sheet Cake” refers to a type of cake which is baked in large and wide pan of square or rectangular shape, known as a sheet pan or baking sheet.

This cake is relatively thin, being single layered, as compared to the routine cakes which are baked in regular cake tins.

The purpose of sheet cake is to serve a larger number of people, as it can be easily cut into squares or rectangles, so is a perfect and ideal choice for gatherings, parties, and events. You must have found such kind of cakes with attractive toppings in restaurants having buffet.

Sheet cake can easily be frosted and decorated in various ways, and their simplicity and ease of serving make them a practical choice for occasions where a traditional layered cake might be less convenient.

FLAVOUR OF SHEET CAKE

Sheet cake is about the type of pan only in which this cake is baked and it has nothing to do with any particular kind of cake flavour.

Batter of any kind of cake if dropped in a wide and large pan, it becomes sheet cake and if the same batter is added to routine round or any other shaped tin, it is not a sheet cake. Simple.

So prepare any batter, be it vanilla, chocolate, orange, banana, strawberry, mango or anything and spread in a wide pan, the pan will give you sheet cake.

ABOUT THE PRESENT CAKE

Here in this post, we have made a simple eggless vanilla sponge cake over which the topping has been done by swirling the chocolate flavoured batter.

Though this cake looks like a zebra cake but we cannot exactly call it a zebra cake.

In zebra cake, vanilla and chocolate batters are meticulously poured into a cake tin to create a striking zebra-stripe pattern, giving a zebra look to the entire cake.

But it is not done so in the present recipe.

The cake is mainly a vanilla cake only but the top is decorated with chocolate batter.

You are not bound to do the same kind of topping but decorate the cake the way you want using an icing or anything.

IS IT NECESSARY TO ICE A SHEET CAKE?

Not at all, it is not necessary to frost a sheet cake. But in case you are making it for party or some special occasion, then some topping should be there to make it presentable.

We have made this cake for eating at home so didn’t go for anything formal and just the zebra pattern made this cake is as impressive to look at as it is to savor.

So even without any frosting, it looked perfect for celebrations or casual gatherings as this too promises a delightful experience for both the eyes and the taste buds.

At first glance, this sheet cake appears as a masterpiece of precision and symmetry, showcasing intricate black and white stripes that mimic the distinctive pattern of its namesake.
