Bread Custard is a dessert with no authentic and traditional history but this crispy bread and creamy custard dessert is such a dish which deserves a wider recognition.
This ghee toasted bread custard dessert is a cross between Shahi Tukda and Bread Custard pudding, having more inclination towards the later one.
In shahi tukda, the bread slices are likewise toasted to crisp but not the custard but thick rabri is spread over them. On the other hand, Bread Custard pudding is an amalgamation of both bread and custard, but it’s either baked or steamed.
That’s why we have called this easy chilled dessert with bread a mashup of shahi tukda and bread Custard pudding.
Just by mere thinking, you can guess that when a crispy roasted bread quarters meet creamy, sweet and chilled custard, what magic they have a tendency to create in your mouth?
So, in this recipe of quick no-bake bread dessert with custard, you need to prepare two components and assemble them later. However it needs no mention that if you skip the bread part, rest is the recipe for custard, a popular dessert which can be enjoyed alone.
As far as the serving of this easy dessert made with bread and custard is concerned, it tastes great when served chilled. So you can do any of the 2 things :
Keep the toasted bread seprate and custard separate. Bread can be placed anywhere but custard in the refrigerator only. At the time of serving, arrange toasted bread quarters in a serving plate, drop some chilled custard, garnish with nuts and serve.
On the contrary, you can prepare everything before hand and keep the plate in refrigerator. Just take out and serve instantly.
In first way, the bread will be more crispy and have less absorption of custard wherever in the later method, bread will turn soft and full of custard flavour.
So choose what suits you the most. This Indian-style bread and custard dessert is great to go as family dessert, dinner parties, festive gatherings like Diwali, rakshabandhan or bhai dooj, or when you have leftover bread and want to turn it into something special.
Step Wise Pictorial recipe of Bread Custard Recipe | Easy Bread Custard Dessert
Add 2 tbsp water in a heavy bottomed pan and also add milk. Put it on high heat.
When milk turns lukewarm, take 2-3 ladles full and add to a bowl carrying custard powder.
Mix it so well.
Add this custard mixture to the milk.
Also add sugar.
Let the milk cook. Keep stirring. Also keep scraping the sides of the pan because malai goes and sticks there.
Boil the milk till it turns thick. You can check by drawing a line at the back side of the spoon.
Once milk is thick, remove the pan from the heat to cool down completely.
In the meantime, take bread slices and cut them into small quarters.
For roasting on tawa, apply desi ghee on non stick tawa.
Arrange bread quarters on tawa.
Apply desi ghee on bread.
Alternatively you can bake in oven or fry bread quarters in air fryer @180° C for 15-18 minutes from both the sides until brown and crisp.
Arrange the crisp bread quarters in a serving dish.
Pour custard milk over them.
Garnish with nuts of your choice.
Enjoy chilled.
NOTES
- You can use regular bread or whatever bread you usually have.
- The bread can be crisped on a tawa, in microwave on roast mode, in oven or in an air fryer.
- Nuts can be changed according to what you have available.
- You can adjust the sweetness of the custard.

- 1 litre/4 cup milk (full fat)
- 2 tbsp water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 4 tbsp custard powder
- 6 bread slices
- Desi ghee as required
- Nuts for garnish
