ABOUT GREEN PEAS PULAO RECIPE
Vegan and gluten-free, this recipe is a pilaf wherein green peas (hindi name matar) are cooked with rice and handful of basic Ingredients in one pot.
To make this recipe, generally basmati rice (most popular rice in india) are used and paired with fresh green peas.
However you can use the frozen peas too.
This pulao is cooked in pressure cooker. But it can be made in Instant pot or even in pan too, with a lid. The details of the same are shared hereunder.
IMMEDIATE RECIPE WITH SIMPLE INGREDIENTS
Few people make this Pulao by separating boiling the peas and later cooking with rice. This is really time consuming method.
But with the given method in this post, you can cook both peas and rice together which saves lots of time and efforts.
The best part of the recipe is that you really don’t need to rush to market for buying anything. All ingredients are very basic and easily available in every kitchen. And most importantly, this recipe is tiffin box friendly. Pack it for the kids school or to your husband’s tiffin box, these rice aren’t going to loose their freshness for a long.
Moreso, if going for a picnic, pack them. You will love them even if they don’t remain warm.
With the arrival of winters, fresh green peas begin to arrive in markets and this is the right time to make matar Pulao with fresh peas.
However you can enjoy this recipe in those months of the year also, when, peas aren’t in season. And it is possible with frozen peas.
Freezing peas at home is quite simple and by following the simple method given here, you can have your own frozen peas. These frozen peas can be used for about an year.
PEAS PULAO IN INSTANT POT
Initial process will remain the same and once all ingredients goes in IP, secure the lid, close the pressure valve and cook for 6 minutes at high pressure.
Naturally release pressure for 10 minutes. Open the valve to release any remaining pressure. Peas Pulao will be ready.
MATAR PULAO IN PAN
Peas Pulao is hardly suggested in pans because making it pan will be quite time taking.
All you need is to cook the peas and rice together, obviously by following the given recipe, with a lid on, until both rice and peas are soft and cooked properly.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS
This Pulao is usually made when you are in a haste and no time to cook detailed meals. Or otherwise, not in a mood to cook at length.
So in that situation, matar Pulao is eaten with plain curd/yoghurt or some raita and pickle, if interested.
But sometimes, if you are bored of regular plain steamed rice and want to pair it with some curry like Rajma masala, chana dal, black eyed peas recipe, or Aloo matar curry, this can be done comfortably.
Do note that if you have plans to serve matar Pulao with any Curry, then add quite less salt in pulao because curry obviously must also have sufficient amount of salt.

Step wise pictorial recipe of Green peas Pulao recipe
- Wash and soak rice for 20 minutes. Keep aside.
- Take a pressure cooker and add oil in it. You can also use Instant Pot.
- Add cumin seeds, bay leaf, star anise, black cardamom, green cardamom, cloves, green chilli and grated ginger. Saute for a minute to make ginger slightly brown.
- Now add onion, coriander powder and garam masala. Saute until onion turns pink and translucent.
- Add green peas and saute again for couple of seconds.
- Drain water from the rice and add rice to pressure cooker.
- Pour water and add salt. Mix.
- Close the lid and let rice cook for 2 whistles.
- Off the heat and let pressure release on its own.
- Matar Pulao is ready.
Enjoy warm.

Ingredients
1 cup = 200 ml
- 1 cup rice
- 1.5 tsp oil
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 star anise
- 1 black cardamom
- 2 green cardamoms
- 2 cloves
- 1 green chilly
- 1 tbsp ginger grated
- 1 medium onion cut lengthwise
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp Garam masala
- 1 cup green peas
- 2 cup water
Instructions
- Wash and soak rice for 20 minutes. Keep aside.
- Take a pressure cooker and add oil in it. You can also use Instant Pot.
- Add cumin seeds, bay leaf, star anise, black cardamom, green cardamom, cloves, green chilli and grated ginger. Saute for a minute to make ginger slightly brown.
