Green beans are known by many other different names like French beans, string beans, snap beans, snaps, and the French name haricot vert as per wikipedia
However they are called “Faliyaan” in hindi.
Winters are the season when indian Vegetable markets have a bulk of fresh green beans and making a combo of green beans and potatoes is something quite common in Indian kitchens.
The simplicity of the recipe can be witnessed from the list of ingredients. Just few handful of things with no fency or expensive ingredients make it love of every dining table.
They are usually served with roti/indian flat bread and having some yoghurt & pickle on the side.

Stepwise pictorial recipe of Aloo Faliyaan
- Take oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, asafoetida, turmeric powder and red chilli powder. Saute.
- Add beans and potatoes.
- Now add salt, coriander powder and garam masala. Mix.
- Pour water and cover the pan with a lid.
- Let it cook on low heat. Keep stirring at intervals until green beans and potatoes turn soft and tender enough to eat.
Enjoy
NOTES
1. While adding dry spices, make sure oil shouldn’t be very hot.
2. If you feel beans and potatoes sticking to the base of pan but hasn’t turned soft, add more water.
3. We love to make it simple without adding onion and tomatoes. However few cook it by adding both the said ingredients too. So if you love to, just add and saute both onion and tomatoes before adding beans and potatoes.
