Pineapple Gojju Recipe | Pineapple Curry recipe | Ananas Menaskai Recipe with step wise pictorial and video method.

Pineapple Gojju is also known as Pineapple Menaskai & is a quintessential dish in the Mangalorean and Udupi region. This dish is celebrated for its unique balance of tanginess, sweet & spicy flavours which make it a perfect dish.

The word “Menasu” is derived from kannada language which means chilli or pepper. So from the name itself, It can be understood that this dish would result to be a spicy one.

There  is another word “Gojju” which is often used in Karnataka. This word refers to a flavorful curry with a thick and tangy base and here we get that from pineapple, jaggery and spices. When brought together, it produces a tangy thick curry.

This dish sets itself apart by using the tropical tartness of pineapple with the sweetness of coconut and spiciness of dry red chilies.

The fresh pineapple chunks, often cooked to retain their slight bite, are simmered in a rich, aromatic gravy made with roasted spices and coconut. This is a very delightful dish where you can feel the natural tartness of pineapple mixed with the sweetness of coconut and jaggery, that goes hand by hand. The pineapple complements the sharp heat of chilies, while the jaggery does its task by adding a depth to the flavour profile, uniquely & precisely. 

This dish is a famous one & holds great meaning to platter in festive spreads. It also serves a traditional meal & is served on banana leaves during the weddings and temple festivals in Karnataka. It is their culture to eat food on banana leaves. This recipe is often paired with hot steaming rice along with a papad or pickle.

Pineapple Gojju Recipe

STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE FOR PINEAPPLE GOJJU RECIPE:

 
Take a pan and add coconut oil in it. When oil melts, add cumin seeds, chana dal, urad dal, fenugreek seeds, white sesame seeds, coriander seeds, dry red chilies and curry leaves.
 
Roast for 2-3 minutes until aromatic and begins to turn slightly brown.
 
Add coconut and turmeric.
 
Give a good mix. Remove the pan from the heat and let cool completely.
 
Grind to a fine paste by adding water.
 
In the same pan, add pineapple chunks, coconut water or plain water, jaggery and salt.
 
Boil 10 minutes .
 
 
Then add the paste made recently.
 
 
Give it a good mix and let cook for 2 minutes.
 
 
For preparing Tempting, take a tadka pan and add coconut oil and when it heats up, add mustard seeds.  When seeds crackle, add dry red chilies, curry leaves and asafoetida . Let them turn slightly crisp.
 
Add this tadka to the curry.
 
 
Give it a good mix. Pineapple Gojju is ready. Serve hot with steamed rice, papad and pickle.

Ingredients
  

FOR MAKING COCONUT PASTE

  • 1 tbsp Coconut oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp chana dal
  • 1 tbsp urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp Fenugreek seeds
  • 1 tbsp white sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 4-5 dry red chilies
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp fresh coconut (grated)
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 cup water

FOR COOKING PINEAPPLE

  • 1 cup pineapple chunks
  • Lemon size jaggery
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup coconut water or normal water

FOR TEMPERING

  • 1.5 tbsp Coconut oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 dry red chilli
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 2 pinches asafoetida/hing
