However this dal is known by many regional names like Kulith, Gauhat ki dal, kharthi, Garahat, Hurdle, Madras Beans, Hulga and Kollu dal.

STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF KULTHI KI DAL RECIPE/HORSE GRAM DAL RECIPE

 

1. Clean the kulthi as it may have stones. Wash and soak it alongwith rajma in drinking water overnight or for 7-8 hours. The quantity of all the ingredients is given in the recipe card below.

2. Next morning, put the soaked kulthi and rajma in pressure cooker alongwith water in which they were soaked.

 

3. Also add asafoetida, turmeric powder and salt.

4. Put a lid and pressure cook for 6-7 whistles.

5. In the meantime, add onion, tomatoes, green chilies, garlic and ginger in a blender jar.

6. Make a smooth puree.

7. Take oil in a pan and when it is hot, add cumin seeds.

8. When seeds begin to splutter, add the onion tomato paste in it. Also add red chili powder, coriander powder and garam masala.

9. Cook the paste until oil separates.

10. By now the daal must have been cooked & pressure released. Add dal to the pan and mix.

11. Also add dry mango powder.

12. Let dal simmer for 1-2 minutes.

Serve after garnishing with coriander leaves.

Ingredients
  

FOR SOAKING

  • 3/4 cup kulthi dal
  • 1/4 cup red kidney beans/rajma (optional)
  • 4 cup drinking water

FOR BOILING

  • Pinch of asafoetida/hing
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste

FOR COOKING

  • 1 big onion
  • 3 tomatoes
  • Small piece of ginger
  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • 2 green chilies
  • Red chilli powder to taste
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tbsp dry mango powder
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Coriander leaves
