Instant Rice flour idli recipe – steamed & microwave methods with step wise pictorial and video method.

Idli, a South Indian delicacy and world famous breakfast recipe is traditionally made with overnight soaked rice and urad dal.

However there are certain Instant versions as well wherein the idlis are made using semolina or rice flour and curd.

When you forget to soak the ingredients at night or for any other reason fall in need to make the idlis instantly, this recipe is surely a winner. No planning, no detailed ingredients, no grinding, no wait of long hours, no hotch potch, just assemble couple of ingredients and make the instant rice flour idlis under 60 minutes.

Furthermore, not just instant, but it is gluten-free as well because only rice flour is used in making these idlis and no use of rawa at all.

This instant version is not just quite handy but equally taste with no compromise at all.

Also, here in this post, we are sharing two ways to make idli, one with idli maker and another in microwave, because everyone doesn’t have idli maker.

Making an idli in idli maker using steamed method is a common traditional way of preparation but what if one doesn’t have idli maker and steamer?

Here comes microwave. In microwave, you can also have the soft and fluffy idlis in just 2 minutes. All you need is very small bowls which are microwave safe.

It needs no mention that idli is traditionally served with sambar and coconut chutney but at times when we are not having much time in hand to make the sambar, then we just relish it with coconut chutney and cup of tea in the morning breakfast or evening snack.

STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF INSTANT RICE FLOUR IDLI RECIPE – STEAMED & MICROWAVE METHODS

 

Add rice flour, curd, salt and 1 cup water in a bowl. Quantity of all the ingredients is given in recipe card below.

Give them a good mix.

Now add little more water to adjust the consistency. Roughly 5-6 tablespoons were need to be added more. Consistency has to be like that of dosa batter.

Rest for 30 minutes.

In the meantime, grease the idli mould, if making on steamer.

If you don’t have steamer, then grease small bowls/katoris/ramekin bowls which are microwave safe.

After 30 minutes, add baking soda in the batter. Whisk it very well.

Pour 2 tbsp of batter in each idli mould but don’t fill over the rim.

Steam for 15 minutes.

For microwave cooking, add 2-3 tbsp of batter in small greased bowl.

Microwave on high power (900) for 2  minutes. Bring out the idli stand/bowl from steamer/microwave. Let them slightly cool for 2-3 minutes.

Gently run back side of the spoon over the edges of idli.

Bring out the idlis and likewise prepare the rest of the batter. Enjoy with coconut chutney and sambar.

  • 2 cup Rice flour
  • 1 cup curd (preferably sour)
  • 1 cup + little more water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • Oil for greasing
