WHAT IS MATAR CHURA?

Matar ka Chura is a traditional winter breakfast dish made with fresh green peas and flattened rice. This is such a delightful delicacy and also called by the other names Chooda Matar or Matar Poha.

ORIGIN OF CHURA MATAR

Chura Matar is basically belonging to Banaras city of Uttar Pradesh, India and  a most common breakfast/street food to be sold across the city.

Usually eaten as a breakfast with a hot cup of tea, this recipe is famous across   the country.

Although other than UP, this recipe is also very famous and commonly made in Bihar as well, but it is made differently at both States.

The prime difference between the both the recipes is that in UP, poha is soaked  before adding and it has no onions, whereas in bihari style, poha is neither soaked, nor have onion but fried and is somewhat like a Poha Chivda.

TYPE OF PEAS/MATAR USED

It is to be noted that Chura Matar is always made with fresh and vibrant green peas which infuse the dish with a burst of color and a sweet, earthy flavor.

This is the reason this is usually made in winters because winters yields the fresh peas.

But in case you are craving for Chura Matar off season, then you can make this delicacy with frozen peas as well, but be ready to accept that taste is not going to be at par with the chura Matar made with fresh peas.

TYPE OF POHA USED IN CHURA MATAR

To make this recipe, it is highly recommended to use extra thick poha/flattened rice because they will be able to hold their shape even after soaking.

On the other hand, if you use thin poha, your Matar chura is going to be very soggy, hence may spoil the taste.

A VERSATILE RECIPE

This recipe is called versatile for the reason that you can do plenty of things with it. In addition to what has already been added, you can go for curry leaves, mustard seeds, boiled potatoes, tomatoes, or even peanuts, adding layers of complexity to the overall taste.

In conclusion, matar ka chura is more than a culinary creation; it is a cultural emblem that encapsulates the essence of Indian gastronomy. Its simplicity, adaptability, and connection to the seasons make it a cherished dish, resonating with both tradition and innovation. So, whether enjoyed as a breakfast staple or a festive treat, matar ka chura stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of flavors that define Indian cuisine.
