Homemade Vegan Wonton Wrappers with step wise pictorial and video method.

Wonton is a kind of thin skinned Chinese dumpling filled with food stuff and mostly eaten boiled in soups.

The most common food goes in the filling is meat but at times it can be vegetables also.

The word Wonton is derived from Cantonese “wahn tan,” which means “swallowing clouds,” because these wontons are so light and delicate and as such look like floating in the soup.

To make the wontons, you need the wrappers and the prime ingredients of the wrappers are flour and egg which makes them elastic.

Here in this post, we are making the vegan wrappers hence there’s no place for eggs. Using simple and basic ingredients, these wrappers can be made and thereafter use the way you like : frying, boiling, steaming, baking or airfrying. In easy words, simple dough, yet so versatile.

Wonton wrappers are available in multiple sizes depending upon their usability. As we are making them exclusively for making Apple Wontons, so kept them 9×9 cm. Big or small, its all upto you what size you want.

STORAGE

If not using immediately, dust them with cornstarch, stack nearly, wrap in cling film and place in refrigerator for 2-3 days.

For long storage, better to arrange a piece of parchment paper between each wrapper, wrap in cling film, put in freezer safe box and freeze for a month or two. Thaw for half an hour before using.

Take flour, cornstarch and salt. Mix. Now start adding water but little at a time. It’s a time to knead it into a dough. Give it a good kneading. Cover and rest for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, knead the dough again for a minute. Take a portion of dough and roll it as thin as possible. Dust cornstarch wherever needed. Depending upon the surface you have, you can roll entire dough in one go or go by portions.

As the size of each wonton wrapper is generally 9 × 9 cm, so we have used scale for results.

Make the wrappers with entire dough. Go ahead and make the recipe/s you want. We have made vegan Apple Wontons in Air Fryer.

NOTES

  1. It can be make with whole wheat flour as well but they will be little denser and less elastic.
  2. Instead of cutting them into squares, if you keep them round, these can be used as dumplings wrappers as well.
