Dal Pithi | Dal Dhokli with step wise pictorial and video method.
A very famous recipe from the land of Bihar, Dal Pithi also known as Dal ki Dulhan in Purvanchal, Uttar Pradesh, is a delicious side dish that uses dal and wheat flour as main ingredients.
Actually Dal ki Dulhan has a slight variation. Dumplings filled with dry dal is named as dal ki dulhan.
In other words, you can call it Atte ke pakode ki dal. Lol.
Indian meals is incomplete without dal which is part and parcel of Indian cuisine. You can’t imagine Indian lunch without a bowl of dal with steamed rice.
You may find this recipe, especially dumplings making part quite difficult but belive us, this is majorly easy task. A video has been attached to the post to make you understand in a better way.
INGREDIENTS USED
WHEAT FLOUR DOUGH: You really need not to make the dough special because dough is usually prepared and placed in the Indian kitchen refrigerators for making rotis.
ARHAR DAL: This dal is also called by the names Toor Dal, Peeli Dal or Yellow Dal commonly used in most Indian households.
MUNG DAL: One of the most basic and commonly used lentil, which gets ready in minutes.
SPICES : This recipe uses very basic and routine spices. You will not find the use of red chilli powder in it.
STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF DAL PITHI
Take dough and roll it with a rolling pin.Using some glass or round cutter, mark the cuts.
Now shape the round dough in a way shown in picture below.
Add washed & soaked (for 1/2 hour) arhar dal & moong dal in pressure cooker.
Then add salt, water and dhokli. Mix.
Pressure cook for 3 whistles.
In the meantime prepare tadka and for that add oil in a pan.
Add cumin, garlic and red chilies. Saute.
Add onion and let it turn pink and translucent.
Then add tomatoes and salt. Cook until raw smell of tomatoes goes.
Lastly pour dal and mix.
Garnish with chopped fresh coriander and enjoy.
DAL PITHI – RECIPE CARD

Ingredients
1 cup = 250 ml
FOR PRESSURE COOKING
- 1/2 cup whole wheat dough
- 1/2 cup arhar dal
- 1/2 cup moong dal
- Salt to taste
- 3 cup water
FOR TEMPERING
- 2 tsp oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp garlic roughly chopped
- 3 dry red chilies
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 2 to matoes grated or chopped
- Salt to taste
- Coriander leaves
Instructions
- Take dough and roll it with a rolling pin.
