Mango has always been served in a simple manner but grilling it takes it’s taste to another level that you would like to try it time and again.
Peaches, pears, melons, bananas, watermelon, pineapple, avocado and figs are some of the fresh fruits that can be eaten grilled and mango is our new entrant.
A sweet and juicy mango when meets the smoke from the grill, makes itself super special.
The another interesting part of the recipe is that it can be served in multiple ways.
Meaning thereby, some seasoning makes it savory and hence can be served as a side dish.
And with some twist, it can become a delectable dessert.
TYPE OF MANGO NEEDED
Furthermore, the type of mango you need for the recipe is important. Do not use the raw mango. Also small tiny mangoes will not work for the recipe.
The mango must be ripe but firm. Overripe mango is not suitable for the recipe because it will not hold it’s shape on grilling. We have used Alfonso for the purpose.
Also prefer to take up big sized mangoes so that you get good size of mango cheeks. So…

STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF GRILLED MANGO (2 RECIPES – SAVORY & SWEET)
MAKING OF SAVORY GRILLED MANGO
1. Take a mango, wash and wipe it.
2. Slice the mango into vertical pieces from the pit so that you get 2 mango cheeks.
3. Now give a few vertical and few horizontal slits giving the mango flush a diamond pattern. Make sure not to cut through the skin, so that the peel should remain intact.
4. Brush some olive oil over the cheeks flush.
5. Grease the grilling pan with olive oil and pre-heat the pan.
6. Place mangoes cheeks on the center of the grill with fleshy side downwards.
7. Grill for 1-2 minutes and thereafter rotate the mangoes 90 degrees and grill for 1-2 more minutes. You can use forks to handle the cheeks comfortably.
8. Take the mango cheeks out and put in a serving plate.
9. Pop the flesh by holding the skin side and pushing upwards.
10. Squeeze half lemon over the mango cheeks.
11. Sprinkle some salt and red chilli powder.
Enjoy.
MAKING OF SWEET GRILLED MANGO (DESSERT)
1.Take 2 tbsp of desiccated coconut in a non stick pan.
2. Dry roast the coconut till it turns slightly brown.
3. Take the coconut out of pan because the pan will still be hot and may burn the coconut. Keep aside.
4. Wash, wipe, cut, make diamond pattern and brush coconut oil over 2 mango cheeks.
5. Sprinkle some brown sugar over the mango cheeks.
6. Grill the cheeks like we earlier did for Savory method.
7. Take the cheeks out in serving plate pop up the fleshy side.
Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and roasted desiccated coconut.

- 1 Mango (ripe but firm)
- Olive oil as needed
- Juice of half lemon
- Few pinches of salt
- Few pinches of red chilli powder
FOR SWEET GRILLED MANGO (DESSERT)
- 2 tbsp Desiccated Coconut
- 1 Mango (ripe but firm)
- Coconut oil as needed (or olive oil)
- Few pinches of brown sugar
- A scoop of Vanilla ice cream for serving (this is non dairy icecream)
