Oats Khichdi Recipe With Yellow Moong Dal | Oats khichdi Without Pressure Cooker with step wise pictorial and video method.

Before going to understand this recipe, those who are not native to indian cuisine, must understand what is Khichdi?
Khichdi is an ancient old traditional Indian one-pot dish made by the combination of rice and lentils (dal) together with mild spices.
Seasoned with very mild spices, it is commonly eaten as a comfort food, especially during illness being light, nutritious and easily digestible.
Khichdi is such a comfort food which requires no accompaniment and it can be paired with just yogurt, pickle or papad for extra flavor. In many Indian households, khichdi is considered a wholesome and balanced meal.
Now coming back to the main topic, i.e. oats khichdi, it is similar to regular khichdi except the usage of oats replacing rice.
Making process of this khichdi is quite simple and initially it is almost like making a yellow moong dal recipe.
Lastly oats are added and the khichdi is ready.
This recipe is made with yellow moong dal but you can replace yellow moong dal with other dal as well but in that case, cooking timings and quantity of water will be different because every dal has its own mature timings.
Made with fiber-rich oats and protein-packed moong dal, Oats Khichdi recipe with yellow moong dal is a wholesome, comforting and nutritious one-pot meal. This dish is going to be light on the stomach yet quite filling.
Easily digestible and packed with essential nutrients, this khichdi is an excellent choice for weight watchers and those seeking a nourishing, balanced meal besides without compromising on taste.
Vegetarians serve it hot with a side of yogurt, pickle or a dollop of ghee for added taste and nutrition whereas for vegans, enjoy it as it is or with some vegan yogurt or just pickle.
STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF OATS KHICHDI RECIPE WITH YELLOW MOONG DAL :
Take yellow moong dal in a bowl, wash 2-3 times and soak for 20 minutes.
While the dal is soaked, take oil in a pan and when it is hot, add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add onion and ginger.
Cook till onion turn soft and translucent. Add tomatoes, salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, green chilies and dry red chilli. Mix.
Put a lid and let the tomatoes cook, while stirring occasionally.
Cook tomatoes on low heat until the oil separates. It’s a sign that tomatoes are thoroughly cooked.
Add soaked moong dal after draining the water and roast the dal for 2 minutes on high heat.
Add water and give a mix.
Let the boil come and till then keep the heat high. Once water begins to boil, bring the heat between low to medium, put a lid on the pan and let the dal cook.
Let the dal simmer for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, remove the lid and you can check the doneness of dal by simply pressing it.
When the dal is completely cooked, add oats and mix well.
Again put a lid and let the oats cook for 5 minutes.
Remove the lid and add coriander leaves. Mix well.
Enjoy.
NOTES :
- The consistency of khichdi can always be adjusted at the later stage by adding a bit of boiling water.
- This khichdi can be made more instantly in pressure cooker with just a bit of changes. The cooking process will remain the same except you need to add dal and oats together after tomatoes are cooked. Water should be 3.5 cups instead of 4 and cook for 2 whistles only. Isn’t that simple?

1 cup = 250 ml
- 1/2 cup yellow moong dal (skinned moong lentils)
- 1 cup rolled oats/old fashioned oats
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp ginger (grated)
- 1 big onion (finely chopped)
- 2 tomatoes (roughly chopped)
- 2 green chilies
- 1 dry red chilli
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
- 1 tbsp coriander leaves (chopped)
