Ingredients

1 cup = 250 ml

  • 1/2 cup yellow moong dal (skinned moong lentils)
  • 1 cup rolled oats/old fashioned oats
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp ginger (grated)
  • 1 big onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 tomatoes (roughly chopped)
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 dry red chilli
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves (chopped)

Instructions

  • Take yellow moong dal in a bowl, wash 2-3 times and soak for 20 minutes.
  • While the dal is soaked, take oil in a pan and when it is hot, add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add onion and ginger.
  • Cook till onion turn soft and translucent.
  • Add tomatoes, salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, green chilies and dry red chilli. Mix.
  • Put a lid and let the tomatoes cook, while stirring occasionally.
  • Cook tomatoes on low heat until the oil separates. It's a sign that tomatoes are thoroughly cooked.
  • Add soaked moong dal after draining the water and roast the dal for 2 minutes on high heat.
  • Add water and give a mix.
  • Let the boil come and till then keep the heat high.
  • Once water begins to boil, bring the heat between low to medium, put a lid on the pan and let the dal cook.
  • Let the dal simmer for 25 minutes.
  • After 25 minutes, remove the lid and you can check the doneness of dal by simply pressing it.
  • When the dal is completely cooked, add oats and mix well.
  • Again put a lid and let the oats cook for 5 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and add coriander leaves. Mix well.
  • Enjoy.

Notes

  • The consistency of khichdi can always be adjusted at the later stage by adding a bit of boiling water.
  • This khichdi can be made more instantly in pressure cooker with just a bit of changes. The cooking process will remain the same except you need to add dal and oats together after tomatoes are cooked. Water should be 3.5 cups instead of 4 and cook for 2 whistles only. Isn't that simple?
