Honey chili potato is one of the most loved and popular Indo-Chinese appetizer which is prepared by tossing the crispy fried potato strips in Chinese sauces like chili & soy along with honey, offering sweet & spicy flavors together in one dish.
Honey chili potato is something which has become one of the most famous & tastiest starters in almost every Indian restaurant. And not just in restaurants but at the wedding functions or other parties as well.
This is an appetizer which gives both sweet & spicy flavour bringing out a beautiful contrast. It has a sticky sauce in which the potato strips are coated, making it look more glossier & tastier.
It is a perfect balance of tanginess, spice, taste & sweetness. Vibrant looking bell peppers & onions, paired with golden-brown potatoes makes it a mouthwatering & visually appealing treat.
This dish is a versatile dish, it can be used as a snack or side dish especially with veg fried rice.
Now the question arises what makes this dish vegan inspite of having a word ‘honey’ in its title?
There was something needed in the recipe which could play the vegan role of honey in this recipe and it was well performed by our own homemade dates syrup.

NOTES :
- You can increase or decrease the quantity of ingredients as per your serving requirements.
- Sweetness can also be adjusted as per personal choice by adding more or less date syrup/honey
- If you are already having Potato Wedges/French Fries, skip that part of making wedges/fries and directly start from making sauces
- It tastes good when hot, but it can also be served at room temperature.
VEGAN HONEY CHILI POTATO RECIPE – RECIPE CARD
Vegan Honey Chili Potato Recipe
Ingredients
FOR FRYING POTATO WEDGES
- 3 Potatoes
- Boiling water
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
- 2 tbsp corn flour
- 1 tbsp oil (in case of air frying only)
FOR PREPARING SAUCE
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp ginger (crushed)
- 1 tsp garlic (finely chopped)
- 2 green chilies (cut or slit)
- 2 tbsp spring onion bulb (chopped)
- 8-10 capsicum cubes
- 8-10 onion cubes
- 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
- 1 tsp green chilli sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce (gluten free)
- 1 tbsp vinegar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp cornflour
- 1/4 cup water
- 3 tbsp dates syrup (if vegan. Non vegans use honey)
- 1 tsp roasted white sesame seeds
- 2 tbsp spring onion greens
Instructions
- Peel and cut the potatoes in wedges. Keep them in water till further step because potato turn brown in contact with air.
- Add these wedges in the boiling water and let them boil for 3 minutes.
- Drain the wedges and transfer in a bowl.
- Add salt, black pepper powder, corn flour and oil. Oil should be added only if you are going to air fry the wedges. In case of deep frying, there's no need of adding oil.
- Give them a good mix.
- Add the wedges in the greased air fryer basket. If you don't have air fryer, you can simply deep fry the wedges.
- Air fry @180°C for 16 to 18 minutes. However pause the air fryer at half time, shake the basket and let further air fry till the whole time is completed.
- In the meantime, add oil in a pan and add garlic, ginger, spring onion bulbs and green chilies.
- Saute till garlic turns slightly brown.
- Add capsicum and onion cubes and saute on high heat for 2 minutes.
- Now add tomato ketchup, green chilli sauce, soy sauce, vinegar and salt.
- Just give them a mix.
- Immediately mix water and corn flour.
- Pour this in the pan and give a mix.
- Let it slightly thicken.
- Add air fried potato wedges.
- Mix well.
- Switch off the heat and then add dates syrup, half of the roasted sesame seeds and half of the spring onion greens.
- Mix well.
- Put into the serving tray and serve hot by garnishing with rest of the roasted sesame seeds and spring onion greens.
