Authentic Sharad Purnima Kheer Recipe: Traditional Festive Delight with step wise pictorial and video method.
The words “Sharad” is a Sanskrit word refers to the Sharad Ritu, which is the ‘autumn season’ in the Hindu calendar and
“Purnima” is also a Sanskrit word, which means ‘Full Moon’.
So Sharad Purnima marks a full moon night during the beginning of autumn season.
This day is seen as a a religious festival celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Ashvin (September to October).
Also called by the other names like Kumara Purnima, Kojagari Purnima, Navanna Purnima, Kojagrat Purnima or Kaumudi Purnima, this day has a great religious significance as it marks the end of the monsoon season and the arrival of autumn.
According to the ancient Hindu mythology, it is believed that during the night of Sharad Purnima, the moon comes closest to the earth and is full of life.
Moon on this night is believed to be full of spiritual and healing properties and as such it’s light helps in rejuvenating the body and mind.
To absorb the maximum benefits out of moon rays, a kheer is prepared on this night and placed under the moon.
Kheer soaks up the moon’s blessings.
This kheer is called Sharad Purnima ki kheer and from the perspective of religion and ayurveda, this kheer, after soaking rays of moon, doesn’t remain a dessert only but becomes a divine medicine.
So this day signifies prosperity and blessings from a supreme power.
STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF AUTHENTIC SHARAD PURNIMA KHEER :
Take a pan and add milk. The vessel you can use can be made of clay, steel, bronze or brass. Avoid using aluminium. Silver vessel is specially recommended for this.
Then add black pepper corns. The quantity of pepper corns depends on the number of members in your family you are going to serve the kheer. You have to add 2 corns per member.
Also add something silver and gold in it. We have added a silver spoon and gold ring after washing. But make sure whatever ornament you are adding shouldn’t have a stone in it.
Let a boil come. Thereafter add cooked rice in it. Depending upon how thick kheer you like, add the quantity.
Also add sugar.
Let only 2-3 boils come.
Cover the bowl of kheer with some muslin cloth.
Place it on the roof or anywhere it can be directly exposed to moonlight. The timings must be from 9:00 PM to 12:00 AM.
Serve to all the members and do add 2 black pepper corns for each member. Remember, remove gold & silver before serving. Also, do not heat the kheer. Eat as it is. And instead of immediately, you can serve this kheer next morning as prasad as well.

- Do not use any nuts or even cardamoms or saffron in it.
- Cover the kheer pot only with muslin cloth or any things through which moon rays can reach upto the kheer.
