Originating from Tibet, Momos have become a beloved street food across the Himalayan regions and beyond.

If talking about our country India, momos are something more available and more lovable amongst other Street food items.

Momos are most loved Street food amongst the young generation. It will not be wrong to say that when coming to Street food, momos definitely secure the first place.

TYPES OF MOMOS

This most loved Street food comes in various types. Here are some popular types of momos with the different fillings, be it vegetarian or non vegetarian:

1. Steamed Momos: This type is the traditional one and momos were born like this only. These where the dumplings whose outer portion is made with all purpose flour and are steamed cooked.

2. Fried Momos: This is the extended version of steamed momos. After steaming, some momos are fried to give them a crispy texture on the outside while retaining their juicy filling inside.

3. Tandoori Momos: Again, the steamed momos are marinated in tandoori spices and then grilled in a tandoor, giving them a smoky flavor. A tandoor is a cylindrical clay or metal oven used in cooking and baking.

4. Kothe Momos: This is the new are pan-fried momos that are lightly fried on one side, often served with a spicy dipping sauce.

5. Soup Momos: Momos served in a clear soup, popular in some regions as a comforting and filling meal.

6. Chocolate Momos: Although not of our liking, but there’s another variety of momos which is a kind of dessert. Momos are filled with chocolate and sometimes fruits, then steamed or fried and served with sweet sauces.

7. Cheese Momos: Momos filled with a mixture of cheese and vegetables or meat, adding a creamy texture to the filling.

8. Jhol Momos: Jhol means broth and these type of momos are originating from Nepal. These momos are served with a flavorful broth poured over them, enhancing the taste and adding moisture.

Each type of momo can vary in flavor and preparation method, catering to different preferences and regional influences.

STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE OF MOMOS RECIPE WITHOUT MAIDA & MOMOS CHUTNEY RECIPE

 

PREPARATION OF STUFFING

Take a chopper and add cabbage. Quantity of cabbage and other ingredients is given in the recipe card below. If you don’t have chopper, you can do it with knife. Chop it and keep aside.

Then add carrots, chop and keep aside.

Lastly add onion, green chilies and garlic.

Chop them too and keep aside.

Add oil in a pan.

Add chopped veggies, black pepper powder, salt and stir fry just for 2 minutes on high heat. Keep aside.

PREPARATION OF DOUGH

Take semolina and add in a grinder jar.

Grind to a powder, as fine as you can do.

Take it out in a bowl. Add salt.

By slowly adding water, knead a dough.

Initially dough will be little sticky. Rest 10 minutes.

Thereafter knead it for a minute. Divide tiny portions of the dough.

Roll a portion using cornflour. Roll it as thin as possible.

Put some stuffing in the middle.

Pick any side of the flatbread and then, start pleating the edges together, pressing them firmly to seal.

When it is half done, pick up the other side and stick it to the pleated side and ensure it’s sealed well.

Put the momos in a greased steamer.

As we have a small steamer, we have used electric rice cooker as well for the purpose of steaming.

Steam cook 15 minutes.

Momos are ready.

MAKING OF MOMOS CHUTNEY

Take a pan and water, tomatoes, dry red chilies, garlic cloves, sugar and salt.

Boil for 10 minutes or until tomatoes turn soft.

 

Remove from the heat to cool completely.

Once cool, grind to a coarse paste.

Take oil in a pan.

Transfer paste into it.

Add tomato ketchup.

 

 

Cook for 5-7 minutes until slightly thick.

Add lemon juice and mix.

Momos chutney is ready.

Ingredients
  

FOR STUFFING

  • 2 cup cabbage (roughly chopped)
  • 1 cup carrots (roughly chopped)
  • 1 medium onion (roughly chopped)
  • 2 green chilies
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
  • 1 tbsp oil

FOR DOUGH

  • 1.5 cup Semolina
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Water to knead dough
  • Corn flour as required for rolling

FOR MOMOS CHUTNEY

  • 2 tomatoes
  • 5-6 dry red chilies
  • 7-8 garlic cloves
  • 1/3 tsp sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 cup water
