WHAT IS APPE?
Appe, also known as “Paniyaram” “Appam,” “Paddu” is a delightful South Indian dish that has gained popularity across the globe for its unique taste and versatility.
Derived from the Tamil word “appam,” meaning “pancake,” these bite-sized treats are a staple in South Indian households and are often enjoyed as a breakfast or snack item.
PRIME INGREDIENT IN MAKING APPE
Appe are usually made with Urad dal and rice. These two ingredients are soaked and then fermented to make appe.
Also semolina, which is also called suji or rawa is widely used in making appe and that is the instant version.
Earlier we have shared the recipe of appe with rava but this time, used rice flour for making the same dish.
Though suji has also been added to them but rice flour is the prime ingredient.
Rice flour appe is also the instant version of appe which needs no soaking, no fermentation. They are just ready in a go under 30 minutes.
PAN TO MAKE APPE
Appe get their peculiar shape due to the pan in which they are made. Also called by the name appe pan, Paddu pan or Paniyaram pan, this pan is having multiple hemispherical molds, giving each appe a distinctive round shape.
Such pans are easily available in the market or online at a very reasonable price.
APPE WITHOUT APPE PAN
There is no way out to make appe without appe pan.
Though there are many people who cook the batter on non stick pan or steam the batter after putting it in small bowls/katoris, but that will be much like utpam or idli, and you can’t call them appe in the real sense of the term.
HOW TO SERVE APPE ?
Appe is often served with a side of coconut chutney or Green chutney.
When you have nothing to serve with appe, simply a ketchup will do the needful.
