ABOUT COCONUT RICE
This is the traditional staple food of South India and also named as Thengai Sadam and Kobbari Annam in the regional languages.
Made with fresh grated coconut and plain steamed rice seasoned with couple of spices, this recipe will take just couple of minutes in getting ready.
Made on festivals or special occasions, these are also made in breakfast when some cooked rice are left from previous day.
2 WAYS TO COOK THESE RICE
Right, these rice can be cooked in 2 different ways depending on the status of rice you have.
The status here means cooked rice or raw rice.
If you have rice made earlier then the process is making coconut rice is so prompt and all you need are 5 to 7 minutes.
And if you are cooking the rice together, you need to add 10 to 15 minutes more in previous 5-7 minutes.
THIS RECIPE WITH PRE-COOKED RICE
If making with precooked rice, then this post is about that Method because we too have made this recipe using leftover cooked steamed rice. So follow the procedures given below.
THIS RECIPE WITH RAW RICE
If you don’t have precooked rice, even then making nariyal chawal is quite simple and easy.
All you need to add water along with raw rice at the end and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
And yes, these rice with raw rice can be made in Instant Pot also. The cooking timing will be 6 minutes.
ANOTHER COCONUT FLAVOURED RICE
STEP WISE PICTORIAL RECIPE
- Add oil in a pan and put mustard seeds. Let them splitter.
- Add chana dal, urad dal and saute them on low heat till they slightly brown.
- Now add green chillies, curry leaves and ginger. Saute till ginger turns slightly brown.
- Add cashews and saute them too. Let them turn very light brown in colour.
- Take grated coconut and add it to the pan. Saute on low heat for couple of seconds.
- Then add cooked rice and salt. Mix well without mashing or breaking rice.
- Coconut rice are ready.
Enjoy hot.

Ingredients
1 cup = 200ml
- 3 cup cooked rice
- 1 cup coconut grated
- 1 tsp mustard seeds / rai
- 10-12 cashews
- 1/2 tsp urad dal/split & skinned black gram
- 1 tsp chana dal/split chickpeas lentil
- 8-10 curry leaves
- 2 green chillies slit
- 1 tsp ginger paste
- salt to taste
- 1.5 tbsp oil
Instructions
