WHAT IS CHAAT?

The word “Chaat” also spelled as “chat” is derived from Hindi word “CHAATNA” which means “TO LICK”

LICK is to be read in a sense that the food is so tasty that one licks his fingers while eating.

So Chaat is a (finger licking) savoury snack typically served as road side food on food carts or food stalls, mainly in Indian subcontinent.

CUCUMBER CHAAT

Cucumber chaat is a savoury snack wherein cucumber is eaten by applying chutney made of dry pomegranate seeds (anardana) alongwith few more little tongue tingling Ingredients.

This chaat is sold by the roadside venders during summers in the streets of Jammu.

CUCUMBER CHAATS IN INDIA

This is not the story that cucumber chaat is sold in jammu only but this chaat is popular across the country.

Sold by the street vendors, cucumber chaat is the love of one and all, especially those who are ardent fan of chaats.

But the cucumber chaats sold in rest of the Indian is way different than the one available in our city Jammu with a name cucumber chaat masala.

To make cucumber chaat masala, cucumber is cut length wise and chaat masala, chilli powder, salt is sprinkled over them alongwith finely chopped onion and coriander.

And lastly, a squeeze of lime. Yum.

ABOUT THE PRESENT RECIPE

The kheera chaat in this recipe is way different.

Kheera (cucumber) is served with chutney instead of sprinkle of some dry spices.

Though the cucumber is cut length wise but this is no hard and fast rule.

Few may cut cucumber in short pieces and pour the chutney.

HOW THIS CHUTNEY IS DIFFERENT?

Here we are comparing this chutney with regular green chutney and anardane wali chutney.

This chutney is different in a way that it doesn’t contain onion like anardane wali chutney.

Also this chutney has tamarind pulp which is not added in regular anardane wali chutney or green chutney.

HOW IT IS SERVED IN JAMMU?

The rehriwalas (street vendors on cart) keep lots of cucumber on their cart along with a knife and peeler.

They also carry a bowl or jar in which chutney is kept.

The chutney they serve over the cucumber is already prepared and they bring it after preparing from home.

When a customer reaches them, they peel the cucumber on the spot, wash and cut it, put them on disposable plates and lastly drop chutney over cucumber.

This is all we get @20/- Rs.

Isn’t it just wow!

NOTES
  1. Few may not like the cucumber seeds intact. You may remove seeds if you want.
  2. Don’t add too much water in one go. Chutney may turn quite liquidy.
  3. Tamarind pulp could be added earlier too while going for first blend. But we were not sure what consistency the chutney will gain after first blend. So to make sure chutney doesn’t become too runny, we blended first with water and after seeing the consistency, accordingly added tamarind pulp.
