WHAT IS SOYA MILK?

Also spelled as Soy Milk, this is a plant based milk made by soaking, grinding, boiling and then filtering the particulates of soyabeans.

Seen as a great substitute of dairy milk, soya bean milk is often consumed by those following vegan lifestyle or are lactose intolerant.

HOW TO USE SOYA BEAN MILK RECIPE?

Soya Milk is exactly used in the manner dairy milk is used.

Make yoghurt, cakes, smoothies, tofu and many more recipes replacing soya milk with dairy milk.

IS LEFTOVER PULP EDIBLE?

The leftover residue collected in cheesecloth/nut milk bag after straining the milk is called Okara.

Many see it as a waste, hence thrown away, but this is absolutely edible being full of nutrients.

It can be added to your cooking in many ways like breads, muffins and cookies in replacement to flour after drying Okara.

Or simply add it to dough for making roti/indian flat bread.

You can make it a part of burgers, patties, porridge, granola bars or smoothies.

STORAGE OF HOMEMADE  SOY MILK

Homemade soya milk remains good in refrigerator for 3 to 5 days, if stored properly in a clean bottle.

STEP WISE PICTORIAL METHOD OF SOYA MILK RECIPE

  1. Rinse and soak soyabeans in enough water overnight.
  2. Next morning, soyabeans must have doubled in size. Rub them with your hands so that their skin is removed.
  3. Drain the water and along with that, soya skin will also be discarded.
  4. Transfer soyabeans to blender alongwith some of the (out of 8 cups) water. If your blender is small, do it in batches.
  5. Blend soya to very fine puree.
  6. Transfer soya puree to a large container/pan.
  7. As whole 8 cups of water couldn’t be used in blending soya, so pour whatever quantity of water is left, directly to the pan.
  8. Place of pan on moderate heat.
  9. Keep stirring deep to the base of the pan to prevent the liquid from burning.
  10. Foam will be seen floating over the surface. Remove it with ladle and discard.
  11. Let the liquid boil for 10 minutes.
  12. In the meantime, take a big bowl and place a sieve over it.
  13. Spread a clean muslin cloth over the sieve.
  14. After liquid is boiled for 10 minutes, pass it through the muslin cloth.
  15. You need to squeeze the muslin cloth to get the maximum liquid out.
  16. A residue will be collected in the sieve over the muslin cloth and liquid will pass to the bowl.
  17. Liquid in the bowl is your soya milk.

Cool the milk completely before moving it to the refrigerator.

  • Cheese Cloth or Muslin cloth or a thin cotton cloth or nut milk bag
  • Sieve and a big bowl

Ingredients
  

1 cup = 200ml

  • 1 Cup soyabeans
  • Water for washing & soaking
  • 8 Cups drinking water
