Whole wheat pizza base recipe

A simple recipe of whole wheat pizza base which requires just 6 ingredients and it is vegan.

Ingredients
  

1 cup = 200 ml

    FOR ACTIVATING YEAST

    • 1/2 cup water luke warm
    • 2 tsp sugar we have used bura sugar. You can use refined sugar
    • 1 tsp dry Yeast

    FOR MAKING DOUGH

    • Activated yeast
    • 1.50 cup Whole wheat flour 240 grams/or all purpose flour
    • 1/4 tsp Salt
    • 2 tsp + 1 tsp oil
    • Water for kneading dough

    ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS

    • Corn meal/makki ka atta for dusting
    • Oil for greasing baking tray

    Instructions
     

    ACTIVATING YEAST

    • Take luke warm water and add sugar in it. Mix.
    • Add yeast and stir. Keep aside for 5-7 minutes.
    • You will notice a frothy and bubbly substance floating over the water having pungent smell. It's a sign that yeast is activated. (see notes below)

    KNEADING THE DOUGH

    • Take wheat flour in a wide bowl.
    • Add salt.
    • Give them a mix and create a space in between the flour.
    • Add yeast mixture.
    • Mix but firstly without adding water.
    • When all the yeast mixture incorporated well, start kneading the dough by adding little water at a time.
    • When the entire flour comes together, add 2 tsp of oil.
    • Knead the dough for 5 to 7 minutes.
    • Grease a bowl in which you are going to keep the dough.
    • Put the dough and apply oil all over it.
    • Place a kitchen towel on the bowl, put a lid and keep it at some warm area of kitchen for about 1 to 1.5 hours. (notes)

    MAKING OF PIZZA BASE

    • After the above mentioned period, uncover the dough. The dough must have been doubled in size.
    • Just knead it for a minute.
    • Divide the dough into 2 equal portions.
    • Take one part and roll it in your palm into a smooth ball.
    • Place this ball on a corn meal dusted platform. Dust some corn meal on the ball too.
    • Roll it into a flat disk.
    • Now with the help of fork, start pricking the disk. This step will prevent the disk from puffing up while baking.
    • Line a baking tray with butter paper and grease it.
    • Place the disk on baking tray.
    • Likewise prepare the second disk too and place on baking tray. Keep some gap between the two discs.
    • Cover them with a kitchen towel and put on rest for 15-20 minutes.
    • Then uncover and bake them in a preheated oven for 10 minutes @180°C in the middle rack. Remember, we don't require to bake it fully but just semi baked.
    • Bring out of the oven, let turn cool and here whole wheat pizza base is ready. Now bake pizza your way.

    Notes

    1. We have used active yeast and this type of yeast requires prior activation. To know more about yeast activation, click here.
    2. If you don't notice any such thing, then wait for some more time and still there's no such reaction, don't proceed with recipe. It will fail.
    3. In case you don't have corn meal, then go for semolina and even if semolina is not possible, then use whole wheat flour for dusting.
    4. Proofing time may vary depending on whether conditions. In winters, dough takes much time in proofing but in summers, it may get fermented in 1 hour even.
    5. Thick or thin crust depends on the rolling. Make it more thin for thin crust pizza.
    6. In case yeast is not available to you and still want to prepare whole wheat pizza dough no yeast, then add 1/4 tsp of baking soda and 1/2 tsp of baking powder with half tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar while kneading the dough.
